The Snow Moon

Despite the somewhat mild weather we have been graced with these past few weeks, the appearance of the Snow Moon (full) in the nights sky is a firm reminder that Winter is far from over.

The February full moon is also a "Super Moon", which means the full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth during its monthly elliptical orbit. As a result, it will appear much bigger and brighter in the sky than usual.

A Super Moon is a celestial wonder because it is when the moon can appear nearly 30% brighter and almost 14% larger than a typical full moon.

During the Super Moon, the effects of the moon's gravitational pull on the Earth’s oceans will be more pronounced, generating higher than normal high tides, known as Spring Tides.

February's full moon is being referred to as the Super Snow Moon. That's because, as well as being a Super Moon, it is also the Snow Moon.
